WHAT TO DO AFTER THE SHOTS
Some children may have discomfort after shots. The needle stick and/or the vaccine
itself may cause this discomfort. There are things you can do at home to make your child
feel better.
INFANTS:
Breastfeed/Offer formula
Hold them close
Talk and/or sing to them softly
TODDLERS:
Hold them close
Reassure them everything is okay
Give lots of praise
Use colorful band-aids
Give lots of hugs
Your child may suffer from some of the more common mild reactions to shots. You can help provide relief.
SWELLING OR REDNESS at the injection site:
Hold a cool clean washcloth on the
area for about 10 to 20 minutes
FUSSINESS due to being too warm:
Give a sponge bath in lukewarm water
Dress in loose clothing
POOR APPETITE is common for 24 hour after shots:
Give plenty of liquids
Plan quiet activities for the next day
or so for toddlers
SKIN RASH may develop 7 to 14 days after the MMR or chickenpox shots:
These rashes may last for several
days; they go away without any treatment needed
FEVER:
If your child “feels” warm, their
temperature should be taken
Follow the directions given by your
child’s doctor if they have a temperature
IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S SYMPTOMS, PLEASE CALL YOUR CHILD’S DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY
